A dying writer cannot resist creating in his final work a dark reworking of his own family, from the emotionally void son and his loyal wife to the embittered mistress and the wild eyed bastard son. Mercer and Resnais have created a twisted world lurking within the bounds of normality, brought to life by a superlative cast and some beautiful imagery.
