This tale, based in events in Ingmar Bergman's own life, tells the story of a love triangle riddled with jealousy, guilt and punishment. When a couple's love is infiltrated by the feelings between the wife and close friend every emotional nuance is examined. More ham-handed than Bergman might have liked, with hackneyed devices abounding, this is nonetheless an old-fashioned story told with the writer's style in mind.
