Set around the original 1922 'Nosferatu' and based on the conceit that Max Shreck who played dracula was in fact a real vampire this film is a deliciously dark tale. The director is obsessed in his pursuit of authenticity, a devotion to his film that is proving fatal for his crew and in particular the camera-men, the grim deal he has made with Shreck no longer enough to keep the old bloodslurper's fangs safely under lock and key. Shadow of the Vampire is a superb oddity; blending period atmosphere, humour, fear, and perfect performances - with Dafoe's in particular outstanding.
