Abbie and Robert are best friends and though he's gay, they accidentally have a child together, Abbie meets and falls in love with a heterosexual male and Robert feels (quite justifiably as it turns out) that his relationship with his son is threatened. The Next Best Thing is a curious mix of comedy for the first half and "true story" style drama for the second, though its common bond is that both are leaden.
