Sarah is a passionate woman trapped in a lifeless marriage, into her life wanders Maurice, a young novelist, and together they enter a fevered and sexually dominant affair that is to last five years until Sarah abruptly walks out of his life. A chance encounter with Sarah's husband a few years later rekindles Maurice's obsession and so begins his desperate search for a meaning as to why she left him.
