On the passenger ship Virginia, a baby boy is found and secretly brought up by the ship's coal room worker, who calls him simply "1900". When his surrogate father dies, 1900 is discovered when he wanders into the first class ballroom and reveals his incredible talent on the grand piano, becoming the ship's star. Three decades later, with the Virginia now just a rusty relic, one man remembers its glory days and the mysterious pianist who disappeared after the boat's final voyage.
