Visually arresting western, set post-World War 2, with Woody Harrelson, (brilliant as always), and Billy Crudup as a pair of homecoming soldier buddies. Returning to cattle-driving and poker-playing, the men's friendship - based on strong bonds of loyalty - is tested when both fall for the same woman, femme fatale Patricia Arquette. A sometimes patchy but sensitively handled study of pointless machismo and tangled lust.
