With Tim Roth making his directorial debut it was a pretty safe bet that this was never going to be a barrel of laughs and, indeed, this is a dark, dark movie tackling the always uncomfortable subjects of domestic violence and incest. Ray Winstone is superb as the father of a seemingly normal family, who've just moved from London to Devon, but, gradually, layer upon layer of unspeakable secrets are unpeeled, culminating in a truly horrific conclusion. Powerful, disturbing and downright excellent.
