Ponderous drama from Bernardo Bertolucci, starring British thespians David Thewlis and Thandie Newton. Shandurai (Newton), whose African civil rights activist husband has been incarcerated, is paying her way through medical school in Rome as a live-in cleaner for English composer Mr Kinsky (Thewlis). After a period of strained co-habitation within an enormous, rambling house, the reclusive Kinsky suddenly announces his undying passion for Shandurai, with unexpected results. Beautifully filmed, but some will find it tiresomely pretentious.
