AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1999)
OLIVER PARKER
Plot
Sir Robert Chiltern is a happily married Government minister, but all of this looks set to change when the scheming Mrs Chieveley appears in London with damning evidence of a past misdeed. Whilst Chiltern wrestles with his conscience, his wife Gertrude and closest friend, the urbane Lord Goring, the pivotal figure in the play and never short of a witty retort, conspire to thwart Mrs Chieveley's plans. One reason why the material has stood the test of time so well is because the issues of morality and one's public and private person are still prevalent. A few months after Oscar Wilde wrote this play his own morality was to take centre stage. Poignant and funny watch.
