SHADRACH (1998)
SUSANNA STYRON
Plot
Shadrach tells the story of a former slave who goes back to his childhood home to claim burial rights. Told in narrative, 10 year old Paul Whitehurst looks back at the summer spent with the Dabneys (played by Andie MacDowell and Harvey Keitel). This gentle and sometimes slow moving melodrama tackles the issues of bigotry and ignorance in a touching and sentimental manner. Directed by Susanna Styron, the film is a homage to her father's novel written in the 70's. This should appeal to kids as well as adults.
