DANCING AT LUGHNASA (1998)
PAT OCONNOR
Plot
A magical adaptation of Brian Friel's stage play, in which a crackled radio broadcast can be a special moment, which conjures up ghosts of pagan gods and a heartbreaking sense of home and family. Set in County Donegal, with Meryl Streep as the God-fearing leader of the Mundy sisters, all single and struggling against the '30s depression. Catherine McCormack and British treasure Kathy Burke turn in particularly impressive performances as Streep's siblings in a tale of hardship, hope and lots of Oirish dancing.
