Plot

Passion-fuelled period melodrama with more than a touch of the Jane Eyres. Sophie Marceau plays Elisabeth, a financially embarassed young woman who rents herself out as a surrogate mother to provide an heir for English aristocrat Charles Godwin. This they duly achieve during three steamy nights in a French chateau, and Elisabeth hands over the infant nine months later. When she turns up as the child's governess seven years later, Charles is none too chuffed, but as Elisabeth begins to bond with her daughter, the uptight toff finds a long-buried tingling feeling increasingly difficult to ignore. Phew!
