LOVE AND DEATH ON LONG ISLAND (1998)
RICHARD KWIETNIOWSKI
Plot
Terrific, tragi-comic tale of obsession, culture-clash and unrequited love, based on Gilbert Adair's cult novel. Giles De'ath (a wonderfully fragile-looking John Hurt) is a reclusive English novellist living in a cultural time-warp, until he accidentally views a cheap college-caper movie featuring bit-part actor Ronnie Bostock (Jason "90210" Priestly) and is instantly smitten. Fast-forwarded into the 20th Century by this uncharacteristic obsession, De'ath discovers the joys of video rental and home-delivered fast food, before taking off to New York to track down the object of his affection. Sensitively made and often hilarious, this is a real little treat.
