THE WEDDING SINGER (1998)
FRANK CORACI
Plot
Corker of a comedy with Adam Sandler (Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison) as wedding singer and all-round nice guy Robbie, who once dreamed of being a songwriter but now provides the ambience at other people's nuptials, whilst eagerly awaiting his own impending marriage to Linda. Julia, the waitress he befriends at a reception, (a sparkling performance from the endearing Drew Barrymore) is also about to tie the knot with the suspiciously smooth Glen. But when Linda jilts him at the altar, Robbie loses the plot in spectacular fashion, (watch out for his hilarious, tortured rendition of Madonna's "Holiday") while it transpires that Julia's intended is a sleazy, unfaithful scumbag. Touching but never cheesey, with a sharp script, nostalgic '80s' soundtrack and superb performances all round.
