It's The Thirty Years War and cockney Caine moves his troops into a valley which he doesn't pillage because he's met refugee philosopher Sharif. This is a recreation of chaotic times for the people of central Europe. Themes of religious division, witchcraft, political intrigue, at village level, and medieval concepts of the role of women contribute to this strong and unusual historic drama.
