THE GAME (1997)
DAVID FINCHER
Plot
What do you give to the man who has everything on his birthday? Michael Douglas's little brother gives him a ticket for 'The Game' in this tense and twisty thriller from the director of Seven. Douglas plays the miserably uptight multi-millionaire whose life becomes considerably more interesting once the game begins, while Sean Penn is the black sheep brother responsible for his torment. As the tycoon's finances, reputation and sanity begin to crumble around him at an alarming rate, the erstwhile control freak has to face the prospect that this may be one game he cannot win. Edge-of-the-seat tension, an excellent performance from Michael Douglas, and a potentially brilliant idea, sadly let down by a cheesey ending. Well worth a watch anyway.
