PORTRAITS CHINOIS (1997)
MARTINE DUGOWSON
Plot
Extremely wordy drama from the director of "Mina Tannenbaum", following nine "arty" types over a seemingly interminable two years. Not a great deal of any interest actually happens while these self-obsessed film-makers and fashion designers whine, bicker, ruminate, fall in and out of love and occasionally die, but it seems to take an awfully long time. Helena Bonham-Carter handles her French dialogue with impressive aplomb, but, all in all, this is strictly for lovers of ponderously profound Euro-waffle.
