The excellent Kevin Spacey (Usual Suspects, Seven, Swimming with Sharks) makes his directorial debut with this tense hostage flick. Three crooks flee from the cops after a bungled heist, taking cover in a dingy basement bar presided over by Faye Dunaway and peopled by a motley assortment of soon-to-be hostages. With the bar swiftly surrounded, the pressure piles up on Nice crook Dova, as Injured crook, Dova's little brother Milo, is writhing in pain and Psycho crook is rapidly becoming more of a threat than the rozzers outside. A familiar plot, but Spacey's masterly direction makes this a pretty gripping crime drama.
