A faithful, if underplayed compared to its cinematic predecessors, adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic gothic love story. Gainsbourg is convincingly fragile as the tragic young governess and Hurt portrays Rochester as a brusque and morose figure. The story is, as ever, riveting, if more a literate rather than melodramatic interpretation.
