Mufasa, a cub lost and alone, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny. Undeniably thin in places (the uncanny valley transported to the Ngorongoro crater) the film works as a surprisingly subversive allegory at times. The scramble for Africa by The Outsiders, led by the white devil Kiros (voiced by Mads Mikkelsen) necessitating a union of both predator and prey (or "tribes" as Mufasa calls them) for a rebellion against tyranny... Barry Jenkins may have been working for The Mouse, but at times in this film the lion shows through.
