Morgan Freeman stars as Nelson Mandela in a movie about the latter's attempts to heal South Africa's racial divides by getting pally with that icon of Boer nationalism the Springboks rugby team and urging them to victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Sound tacky? Well prepare to be surprised as the octogenarian Eastwood delivers a detailed picture of the South Africa of the time, the racial divide, apartheid's cultural legacy and the (at the very least short-term) success of Mandela's strategy. Mainstream and predictable, but uplifting and moving.
