ULZANA'S RAID (1972)
ROBERT ALDRICH
Plot
Despite the directors reported dissatisfaction with the way Ulzana's Raid turned out it's still widely perceived as one of Robert Aldrich's finest efforts. Burt Lancaster stars as a scout assigned to aid a cavalry platoon hunt down a band of renegade Apaches responsible for rape and murder. At a time when Hollywood represented the native American tribes as little more than savages, noble or otherwise, Aldrich manages to infuse the narrative with an ambiguity that avoids the usual pitfalls of such cinematic stereotypes. With an intelligent script and a brutal but never gratuitous depiction of the violence perpetrated by both sides Ulzana's Raid is a thought provoking and engaging Western.
