In 1959, Truman Capote, a popular writer for The New Yorker, learns about the horrific and senseless murder of a family of four in Halcomb, Kansas. Inspired by the story, Capote and his best friend, Harper Lee, travel to the town to research for an article. However, as Capote digs deeper into the gruesome tale, he is inspired to expand the project into what would be his greatest work, 'In Cold Blood'. Against Harper's advice Truman's visits with those responsible for the killings become increasingly frequent and intense, in particular those with Perry Smith, a quiet and articulate man who causes Truman to question his understanding of good and evil, right and wrong, compassion and callousness. 'In Cold Blood' stands as one of the greatest works of modern non-fiction and Capote as an icon of contemporary literature and this dramatisation, fittingly, is one of the finest celluloid biogs to hit the big screen. Hoffman puts in a truly mesmerising (and Oscar winning) performance. In all likelihood, one of the best films of the year.
