TIMON OF ATHENS (BBC) (1981)
JOHNATHAN MILLER
Cast
Plot
One of the BBC's exhaustive and exemplary adaptations of one of the great Bard's lesser known works. Jonathan Pryce is wonderful as Timon, turning seamlessly from generous, open-hearted fool to twisted, unhappy beggar. John Shrapnel is about the best of the rest, although all are good within the constraints of their character types. Many doubts have been cast over the authorship of this play, but current hypotheses suggest a collaboration between the Bard and Thomas Middleton. This is performed in Jacobean, rather than Greek, costume.
