SHAKESPEARE TRAGEDIES: THE ANIMATED TALES (1992)
LEON GARFIELD
Cast
Plot
One part of a highly acclaimed series of abridged Shakespearean tales, which can be used either as an introduction to the bard's work, or (due to the skilful animation) can provide a fascinating alternative interpretation. Macbeth is one the darker plays, full of madness, witchcraft and murder. Romeo and Juliet is the archetypal tale of pride, revenge and a doomed, star-crossed love. Hamlet... well that should do it really, but just in case; spoilt, slightly unhinged lad, starved of real parental love, father murdered, mum marries prime suspect, boy becomes even more loopy, but method in his madness, determined to find the truth and wreak revenge, falls in love with forbidden fruit, tragedy lurking patiently in the wings. Othello is a fine adaptation with an especially sinister Iago, who vows his revenge when the debonair Cassio is promoted ahead of him. Iago understands Othello The Moor's insecurity in Venetian society, specifically with regard to the loyalty of his beautiful young wife Desdemona.
