LAYER CAKE (2004)
MATTHEW VAUGHN
Plot
An educated, highly efficient, mid-level cocaine dealer is working towards his dream of early retirement. He's not flash, he's not brash, he's a businessman. His business just happens to be illegal and many of his colleagues and customers happen to be lethal. When our dubious hero reluctantly takes on a missing person's job for one of London's kingpins, his organised existence begins to unravel, and when some ruthless Serbian gangsters enter the scene looking for their stolen ecstasy, early retirement looks like it may be in a body bag. Layer Cake is a well-acted, well-executed, pacey gangster-thriller, and while there are shades of Snatch' to be seen, the two-dimensional mockney characters and simplistic humour are mercifully absent.
