THE VILLAGE (2004)
M NIGHT SHYAMALAN
Plot
A small, self-contained and self-sufficient New England community live a simple but harmonious existence, they have only one fear, the unknown but malevolent beast that roams the woods, a terrifying creature that the villagers keep sated with regular offerings of livestock. Only when tragedy strikes does one person decide to make the perilous journey to seek outside help, initiating a revelation that brings into sharp focus the reason for the wood's demonic presence. M Night Shyamalan's fourth film is a lovingly crafted drama, imbued with the element of horror and supernatural that worked so well in The Sixth Sense, and gifted with a final twist that takes advantage, to good effect, of our expectations based on his previous films. The village is a subtle, intelligent and gripping drama.
