LIVE AID: disc 1 (1985)

Plot

Aah, those were the days. Madonna was Desperately Seeking Susan, there was a plethora of slogan tee shirts advising us to Choose Life or Relax and a bunch of mulletted rock stars could encourage a nation to dig deep and raise eight million quid for famine relief on the back of a hastily written christmas single. The following summer they all got together again for a concert at Wembley and raised a shed load more. No mean feat in the most selfish decade in living memory. Almost twenty years on the release of the event on DVD serves as something of a pop historical document, featuring many of the biggest names in music at the time. Disc one sets the scene with the original heart breaking BBC news item by Michael Burke, which inspired Saint Bob to take action in the first place. For those of us who grew up in the eighties this concert signifies just about the only memorable event of a decade which we would otherwise rather forget. Not counting The Smiths. Who don't appear. All money paid to hire this disc goes to UNICEF.
