THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2005)

MEL GIBSON

Plot

A young man, well liked, indeed adored, by many, and wise beyond his years, Jesus has no history of violence bar an unsightly scuffle in the local market, yet he is convicted by a corrupt politician of crimes against the state and sentenced to death. Jesus takes his fate well, but a tortuous and brutal day awaits him. I suspect I'm giving little away when I say things don't go well, there's no last minute reprieve, no audacious escape, he simply dies agonisingly. The Passion Of The Christ is an undeniably powerful film, visually beautiful, despite the often horrifically graphic depiction of Jesus' suffering, and though we all know in our heart of hearts that God is merely a man made creation that distracts from simple humanity, Gibson's film does have merits as a film, so whether you watch it with contempt, curiosity or blind faith, it will provoke you.
