WINDTALKERS (2002)
JOHN WOO
Plot
It's the tail end of WWII and the Americans are engaged in a brutal series of Island hops on a slow bloody approach to Japan. Two marines are given the task of protecting (at all costs) Navajo Indians Ben Yahzee and Charlie Whitehorse who have been trained to utilise their native tongue in a secret military code that the Japanese cannot break. Windtalkers is a curiously traditional war movie considering it comes courtesy of John Woo, full of gritty heroism, self-sacrifice and men bonding, regardless of beliefs, in the face of mutual adversity. An enjoyable enough film but surprisingly lacking in the director's trademark flamboyance.
