East Africa, 1896. A railway constuction has been halted by the man-eating rampage of a pair of lions and two big-game hunters are out to stop them. Something sinister, however, lies behind the mayhem and it'll take more than man alone to stop the force behind these beasts. A superbly spooky true story.

A cop and gangster come head to head in Mann's masterly crime epic. Painstakingly detailed and featuring enough characters, subplots and telling nuances to fill out half a dozen conventional thrillers, this is simply the best American crime movie - and indeed, one of the finest movies, period - of the 90s. The action scenes are better than anything produced by John Woo or Quentin Tarantino; the characterisation has a depth most American film-makers only dream of; the use of location, decor and music is inspired; Dante Spinotti's camerawork is superb; and the large, imaginatively chosen cast gives terrific support to the two leads, both of whom are in glorious form.

Terence is a cop addicted to pain-killers prescribed to him after a work-related back injury during the Katrina flood. A chance for redemption occurs as he investigates the murder of an immigrant family. Not to be confused with Abel Ferrara's 1994 film this is an exotic blend of European and American cinematic styles; free-spirited American junk and experimental, police procedure and fantasy. Critically acclaimed but a box-office loser - never again will the manic German be allowed loose on a Hollywood play-set.

Don't come looking for plot - our teen years didn't have one either. Like Dazed and Confused before it, Palo Alto throws us into the joys, pains, and emotions of the life of American-suburban adolescence. Though unlike its defacto predecessor, Palo Alto takes a look at this world through a softer, more elegant, more personal lens. The film bounces us around from character to character, all high school students in the titled town. Reckless parties, desperate sexual encounters, jealousies, weed, breaking things, sexually aggressive teachers (James Franco) and, of course, homework. It's all part of the world of Palo Alto. There is no rhyme or reason. Or is there? James Franco (whose book of short stories the film is based on) plays Mr. B, the high school soccer coach, tells his favourite player April that everything has a reason. Maybe he's right. You be the judge. Director Gia Coppola, in her first feature-length effort, works wonders at keeping the characters and the world of Palo Alto authentic. "Glee" exists in a land far, far away from here. Instead, we get an unfiltered look at what it takes to navigate the turbulence of adolescence and find our path to adulthood. It's a painful but beautiful thing.

Written by the always controversial Quentin Tarantino, this is romance with a big difference. Teenage hooker Alabama marries shy guy Clarence and pretty soon the happy couple are on the run from just about everyone. Fast, brutal in places, with a heavy dose of dark humour. Not to be missed.

Wyatt Earp and his gang are back. Yet another shoot-out at the OK Corral, but this time that's not the end as the film follows the two sides to the death. A well made and gripping film with the show somewhat stolen by Val Kilmer as a dandy Doc Holliday, shooting first, quoting Latin later! Superb rootin' tootin' entertainment .

This 3D film project about the soul of buildings allows six iconic and very different buildings to speak for themselves, examining human life from the unblinking perspective of a manmade structure. Six acclaimed filmmakers bring their own visual style and artistic approach to the project. Buildings, they show us, are material manifestations of human thought and action: the Berlin Philharmonic, an icon of modernity; the National Library of Russia, a kingdom of thoughts; Halden Prison, the world's most humane prison; the Salk Institute, an institute for breakthrough science; the Oslo Opera House, a futuristic symbiosis of art and life; and the Centre Pompidou, a modern culture machine. CATHEDRALS OF CULTURE explores how each of these landmarks reflects our culture and guards our collective memory.
