A flawed masterpiece of the cinema by one of its greatest craftsmen. This is the tale of the decline of a once powerful Southern family. Great because of the film's narrative structure and Welle's consumate grasp of the cinematic idiom - flawed because of RKO's insensitive editing in his absence.
