Review
The Dark Side of the Moon remained on bestseller charts for nearly 14 years, ensuring that the contents of the album permeated the cultural consciousness to the same degree as it's classic sleeve art. Recent years have even seen the album blessed with its own urban myth, tying its lyrical concepts to the classic movie The Wizard of Oz (start the album off at the MGM lion's third roar at the beginning of said movie and see how many 'coincidences' occur...)Here the album's origins and enduring importance as a landmark work are discussed by all four members of Pink Floyd and key personnel - engineer Alan Parsons, mixing supervisor Chris Thomas and sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson are among those sharing their stories. A fascinating track-by-track deconstruction of the LP's master tapes (the isolated vocal harmonies are breathtaking), archival footage, early demo tapes, and latter-day performances by David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright (demonstrating each track's contribution to the final mix) are all likely to add extra dimensions to even the foggiest recollections of the album. Insightful and illuminating as it was, though, I was gutted they didn't mention the Wizard of Oz myth...
