Ruth is a beautiful young woman, frustrated with the modern world and her overbearing, though loving, family. Travelling to India she finds spiritual enlightenment, but her happiness is tainted by the horror of her family, who, in a desperate attempt to secure her return to Australia, emotionally black mail their daughter and then hire a counsellor who specialises in deprogramming cult members; But the professional is about to experience a mind-blowing reversal of roles. Holy Smoke is a an often bizarre comedy, drama with some fine performances and Jane Campion's unmistakable flair. Too off kilter for some perhaps, but otherwise well worth a watch.
