Truffaut's adaptation of Ray Bradbury's best-selling (and infinately better) sci-fi novel casts Julie Christie in a challenging dual role, both as wife and as a mysterious young stranger and marks his English language feature debut. Although set in a future where books are banned, the imagery is pure sixties kitsch, even as the stormtrooper-like firemen, led by Montag (Oskar Werner) burn the forbidden literature. When Montag meets a revolutionary schoolteacher (Christie) who reads and collects books, he's forced to choose not only between two women, but between authority and intellectual freedom.
