Rickman's directorial debut is a faithful adaptation of Sharman MacDonald's stage play, set against an icy Scottish backdrop. Mother and daughter Emma Thompson and Phyllida Law are two of the characters pondering the meaning of life and generally rattling around in this desolate seaside town, while the Grim Reaper lurks ominously around the proceedings. An engaging, involving human drama with a sharply sensitive script.
