In 1950s Alabama black people were forced to stand at the back of the bus. When the black community unite in a boycott, Odessa Cotter has to walk miles to work in a white woman's home. Her employer is so impressed by her stand that she risks her marriage and lifestyle by joining the fight for Civil rights.
