Scott Donaldson says: "A ?lmic take on the notorious Rampart scandal in LA (also the jumping off point for TV's excellent The Shield), the ?lm follows Woody Harrelson as a cop who is permanently in full on sh*t kicker mode, although there is little detecting for this detective so don't expect much in the way of sleuthing cop thriller stuff. Instead we get slow moving character study, more Bad Lieutenant than Beverly Hills Cop.

Not to say it isn't fun, as Harrelson's performance alone makes Rampart worth a go, plus there's the added bonus that the ?lm was written by James Ellroy, so it's even got good words! Not to say that this is anything like previous Ellroy fair - we're still a long way shy of the near-perfection L.A. Con?dential. Gone is the greasy underbelly of high-society. This is
the ?lthy backside of America."
