When a naive, small-town insurance agent Tim Lippe goes to a convention in the big city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his life gets turned inside out under the influence of three convention veterans up for a bit of ‘away from home’ partying. What is on the face of it a pretty generic comedy manages to transcend its tired format with some sparkling pathos driven wit and a cracking cast, sweet but not saccharine and with a scene stealing balls out performance from John C Reilly. An easy pleasure.
