It's New Years Eve and the good ship Poseidon is stacked to it's chandeliered rafters with revellers when a freak wave suddenly turns everything pear-shaped. Ignoring the captain's advice to stay put and wait for rescue a group of party-goers led by ex-firefighter/Mayor/all-round-good-guy Kurt Russell decide to brave flash fires, explosions and the quickly encroaching ocean to reach the hull and escape. A remake of a classic disaster movie, Poseidon just goes to show that more money and bigger special effects do not a good movie make, the characters, action, suspense and emotion present in the original are all sadly lacking here but it's big, shiny and has a few dark moments which help to avoid the syrupy sentimentalism so often evident in Hollywood blockbusters.
