David is the first artificial being to have been created by man with the ability to feel and express real human emotions. Used as a surrogate child by a needy family, David is then discarded and, along with his friend android gigolo Joe, sets about finding a true home within the world that has made him. A.I. is a concept by Stanley Kubrick, which Steven Spielberg then brought to fruition...unfortunately. The film has some stunning special effects and the story is thought provoking and engaging, but what was no doubt a dark and poignant tale betrays itself with a saccharine finale. A.I. is still a very watchable movie, you just can't help wishing Kubrick had been alive to make it himself.
