The fifth installment in the ape vs man saga, this is as one would expect, not the best of the bunch. A rather banal script attempts to bring the story full circle by presenting a struggle between vicious gorillas, pacifist chimps and underground mutants while trying to avoid the comic strip philosophy that gave the other films depth and credibility.

Under the planet of the apes an older civilisation is discovered, living in the ruins of New York, and worshipping an atom bomb. This is the first sequel, and has some of the mystery and invention of the original, but lacks the originality of the plot. Not bad at all, it picks up immediately where Planet left off, the film quickly jettisons Heston (who didn’t want to appear at all, donated his salary to charity, and only agreed to what amounts to a cameo role after the studio agreed to kill off

An American metropolis is afflicted by a plague of blindness and the stricken are quarantined by jack-booted soldiers and, amongst gruesome levels of degradation, turn, ‘Lord of the Flies'-style, to savagery. One seeing/immune person must lead others out of the hellish quarantine station to the world outside... a world that has collapsed.

Hiding and enslaved in a future Earth, Caesar, the son of Cornelius and Zira, prepares an uprising against his human captors. As with its predecessors Conquest of the Planet of the Apes explores issues such as xenophobia and cruelty. Certainly the darkest of the series, 'Conquest' is also the the most under-rated.
The picture features a slave revolt that was specifically based on footage of the 1965 Watts Riots.
