This movie shocked audiences back when it was first released, a sympathetic portrayal of two strangers who meet in a train station and have a non-consumated extramarital affair, was too strong for the times. Written by the equally shocking Noel Coward, this is a classic British melodrama.

Susan Sarandon (exuding sexiness) plays a baseball fan so dedicated that she handpicks a member of the team every season for a little off-field training which is guaranteed to improve their batting average. The race is on between an old pro (Costner exuding charm) and an erratic newcomer (Robbins exuding youth) in this superior romantic comedy.

Bohemian junkie poet Dan falls in love with gorgeous, but emotionally scewed up, art student Candy, whom he turns on to heroin. Junkies together their relationship alternates between states of oblivion, self-destruction and despair. With sympathetic performances from all concerned 'Candy' is an interesting observation of drug addiction and the blurring of emotional perception that it can bring. Don't be turned off, the tone of the movie is not as bleak as the storyline suggests.

George is a Glaswegian bus-driver, free spirited and pissed off with his job, Carla is an emotionally scarred, impoverished refugee and 2/3rds of this film is an uplifting tale of their romance. The last 1/3rd, in Nicaragua, is where they find their destinies. This is also a savage indictment of US policy.

A very strange little number which was released, then immediately withdrawn in 1932 to remain banned for over fifty years. Still pretty disturbing today, despite the triumph of the various aesthetically-challenged "freaks" over their so-called normal tormenters, showing the revenge taken by a group of circus freaks on a beautiful trapeze artist and her strongman lover after they have tried to kill a midget for his fortune.
