01 Tara's Midnight Movies
Nothing more can be said about this classic melodrama from the peak of the Hollywood studio-film era. Hardened cynic Bogart softens when he meets old flame Bergman who is now a refugee in neutral wartime Casablanca. Together they outwit the Germans... and of course there's that famous song. Watch this classic or some day you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow...

IN A LONELY PLACE (1950)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Brilliantly directed story about a psychotic Hollywood scriptwriter, who is suspected of murder but given a false alibi by his gorgeous neighbour. Bogart's character never lets up and you're never sure if he's guilty or not, and nor is his lovestruck neighbour. As the police close in, it develops into a beautifully tense psychological thriller, did he do it and will the girl stand by her man? Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

L'ANNEE DERNIERE A MARIENBAD (1961)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Resnais's controversial attempt at collaboration with avant garde author Alain Robbe-Grillet. The film sets up a puzzle that is never resolved, a man meets a woman in a rambling hotel and believes he may have had an affair with her the previous year at Marienbad - or did he? Or was it somewhere else? Deliberately scrambling chronology to the point where past, present and future become meaningless, Resnais creates a vaguely unsettling mood by means of stylish composition, long, smooth tracking sh

PLEASANTVILLE (1998)
Certification12 Our Rating
This thoughtful, feelgood fantasy-comedy-drama is Hollywood at its best. Nineties teenager Tobey Maguire and his wild child sister Reese Witherspoon get the culture shock of their lives when they're sucked through the TV into '50's sitcom Pleasantville. Given that in Pleasantville there's never been passion, hatred, war, tears, rain, or even colour, the residents get quite a surprise too when real life starts creeping into their perfect, monochrome world. Thought-provoking and thoroughly enterta

SHORTBUS (2006)
Certification18 Our Rating
If you thought Hedwig and the Angry Inch was a film unlike any other you'd seen before, get ready for Shortbus: a frank and fun film about the sex lives of humans, ostensibly set in New York, but relevant to every one of us. The plot plays a supporting role in what is, in many ways, a beautifully disguised self-help documentary. Sex therapist Sofia (played by Canadian radio star, Sook-Yin Lee) has frequent, athletic (yet frustratingly unfulfilling) intercourse with her boyfriend. Her seeming ina

SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950)
CertificationPG Our Rating
All time classic wonderfully filmed by Wilder, featuring great performances from Holden, as a bankrupt screenwriter seeking refuge, and Swanson, a faded star in a crumbling mansion, who pins her hopeless hopes of a comeback on the writer. Deliriously dark and nightmarish masterpiece.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1988)
CertificationPG Our Rating
A superb modern-day fairy tale, with everything you could want; princes, pirates, villains, heroes and miracle workers. What makes this really shine is that it manages to combine highly effective adventure and self-parody, and thus is sure to entertain everybody, kids and adults alike. This film is well good.

VERTIGO (1958)
CertificationPG Our Rating
Another Hitchcock masterpiece, featuring some of the most inventive and unsettling camera work in cinema. Stewart plays a retired detective who is hired by a friend to follow his unstable wife. However the plot is considerably more entangled than it appears from the outset as Stewart becomes a witness to the wife's death. A moody and considered psycho-drama...
