The story of a director, devoid of inspiration and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, trying to satisfy the anticipation surrounding his next project. Surreal, serio-comic mildly autobiographical and widely acclaimed as one of the great films about movie-making. Fellini's masterpiece. find out more...

Set against the backdrop of an elite American East Coast prep school, protagonist Robert is an apathetic teenager who seems interested only in YouTube-esque videos of either babies, kittens, pornography or violent acts. When Robert takes part in the school's AV club he unexpectedly captures a traumatic event that will irreversibly alter the lives of everyone at his school. Far from ‘easy viewing', 'Afterschool' is an intense, intelligent and provocative account of one boy's conflicted and trou find out more...

A man writes and loves in darkness. Fourteen years ago he was in a car crash where he lost not only his sight but also Lena, the love of his life. He had two names; Harry Caine, a pseudonym with which he still signs his written works, and Mateo Blanco, his real name, with which he signed the film he directed. After the accident, the only way Harry could cope with not being able to make films was to imagine that Mateo died along with his beloved Lena. One night, in conversation with his friend an find out more...

How to describe 'Inland Empire' to the uninitiated? I think the answer is if you're new to David Lynch films don't start with this one, if you like his stuff you'll love it. Nikki, a leading Hollywood film actress, but living an empty life, starts work on a film that is a remake of an old Polish film that was never completed due to too many on set deaths. People, especially Nikki, get whisked from place to place and time to time in a series of nightmarish non-sequiturs, but at least you know whe find out more...

An aspiring playwright allows his artistic integrity to crumble and quickly sees his marriage go the same way. Fritz Lang plays the earnest film director at war with a producer who has more money than taste. Brigitte Bardot is magnetic as the contemptuous wife whose respect for Piccoli withers as he's seduced by Palance's financial clout. Tres chic. find out more...

Critically maligned on its release, this tale of a twisted lens-man who lures unsuspecting female victims to their grisly death is an interesting study in the voyeuristic implications of cinema. The killer is an eternal victim whose crimes are cries of rage against his father and stepmother and, at the same time, pathetic rehearsals for his own inevitable death. A Freudian script of notable maturity teases limitless implications from this premise, while maintaining a healthy sense of humour. find out more...
SHORTBUS (2006)

If you thought Hedwig and the Angry Inch was a film unlike any other you'd seen before, get ready for Shortbus: a frank and fun film about the sex lives of humans, ostensibly set in New York, but relevant to every one of us. The plot plays a supporting role in what is, in many ways, a beautifully disguised self-help documentary. Sex therapist Sofia (played by Canadian radio star, Sook-Yin Lee) has frequent, athletic (yet frustratingly unfulfilling) intercourse with her boyfriend. Her seeming ina find out more...

"Josephine Decker has created a new style of thriller that employs allegory, incorporates touches of David Lynch as well as Magritte -esque imagery. Decker's setting of a remote farm feels like a metaphor for what turns out to be hell. The raw and emotional (and yes, sometimes funny) dialog tells a story that can seem familiar at points but really is meant to keep you guessing and off balance. I really enjoyed how the undertones of this film came to life through her very deft contrast of the find out more...

TIMECODE (2000)

Certification15 Our Rating

A fascinating and blindingly original movie concept that utilises a four split screen shot continuously over 90 minutes and with a dialogue that is largely improvised. Mike Figgis' experimental drama is set in LA around a casting audition that takes in not only the shallow nature of its subject matter but also romance and even murder. "Timecode" is a movie screaming to be labelled pretentious but Figgis manages to create a tale that is both gripping and ingenious. find out more...
