A supernatural, fantastical tale of love found in the sleezy and glitzy streets of central Paris. 'Angel–A' is quintessential Luc Besson, ie little in the way of story, but my, the cinematography from Thierry Arbogast does look absolutely stunning.

Three generations of women, all named Cissy Coalpitt, drown their husbands and then have to deal with a leacherous coroner whose silence is bought in return for sexual favours. A complex web of interlocking references to games, sex and mortality, famous last words, Samson and Delilah, Breughel, circumcision et al. A very black and bawdy comedy, highly recommended for lovers of the off-beat.

David Thewlis delivers an incredible performance as the clever and sarcastic Johnny. On the run from reality he turns up at his old girlfriend's house in London, where he proceeds to cause havoc. An inspired mix of script and improvisation with masterful direction, Leigh has taken a dark and inward look at life on Britain's bottom rung. Superb.
