Stylish chiller thriller with Denzel Washington as homicide detective John Hobbes, who gets the heebie-jeebies at a spate of murders bearing all the trademarks of serial killer Edgar Reese - because Hobbes himself watched Reese put to death in the gas chamber. Forced to confront facts which go against everything the hardened cop knows to be true, Hobbes finds himself on the trail of an unseen entity which can take over anyone it fancies. It's the off-season at the lonely Beauregard Hotel in Bournemoth, and only the long-term tenants are still in residence. Life is stirred up, however, when the beautiful Ann Shankland arrives to see her alcoholic ex-husband, John Malcolm, who is secretly engaged to Pat Cooper, the woman who runs the hotel.
