PHANTOM (2012)

Fitfully claustrophobic submarine-set chamber drama based less on established historical fact than the conjecture, in Kenneth Sewell's investigative book Red Star Rogue, that in 1968 the Soviets secretly planned to launch a stealth attack on Pearl Harbor in order to spark a nuclear war between China and the USA. The ever-reliable Ed Harris lends much-needed ballast as Demi, the disgraced naval captain whose One Last Job rather predicatably turns into a struggle to save the world from arm find out more...

Gripping dramatization of the goings on in the White House during the Cuban Missile Crisis, revealing how close the American military were to starting World War 3 after the Soviets responded to the placement of first strike nuclear weapons in Turkey by trying to place them in Cuba. As the world teetered on the nuclear brink a small number of White House aides fought off the majority view, and peace prevailed as Kennedy capitulated and agreed the withdrawal of US weapons from Turkey. Excellent. find out more...

"Josephine Decker has created a new style of thriller that employs allegory, incorporates touches of David Lynch as well as Magritte -esque imagery. Decker's setting of a remote farm feels like a metaphor for what turns out to be hell. The raw and emotional (and yes, sometimes funny) dialog tells a story that can seem familiar at points but really is meant to keep you guessing and off balance. I really enjoyed how the undertones of this film came to life through her very deft contrast of the find out more...

WARGAMES (1983)

This movie is about as good as it gets from John Hughes. The plot revolves around the rather farsighted premise (this is 1983, folks!) that a young high school punk hacks into the national defence network (the old internet) and starts off a global nuclear incident. As Cold War paranoia abounds him and his girlfriend have to convince a disbelieving US military that it's all a big mistake. Sounds all a bit hokey, I know, but where the film lifts itself above the normal teen trite Hughes has bee find out more...
