It's the off-season at the lonely Beauregard Hotel in Bournemoth, and only the long-term tenants are still in residence. Life is stirred up, however, when the beautiful Ann Shankland arrives to see her alcoholic ex-husband, John Malcolm, who is secretly engaged to Pat Cooper, the woman who runs the hotel. 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' (skillfully adapted from the book of the same name) is a modest but thoroughly engaging thriller. Set in a gloomy modern Sweden, the atmosphere is tense, the characters authentic, whilst the mood is sombre and slightly dreamlike. Don't be fooled though, this is a psychologically brutal film addressing themes such as incest, sadism and violence, particularly against women.
